Although Dallas is a large city, educational opportunities for performing arts students are concentrated among only a few institutions. For example, actors can study at the Actors Conservatory, and music, theatre, and dance degrees are offered at the University of Texas at Dallas. The dance program at this school is just a few years old, but it already supports two dance companies and a variety of performance opportunities.
Full-time employment prospects for the performing arts in Dallas look good on the surface, given that both the acting and musicians/singers sectors are set to see a 20% increase in total jobs through 2012, which is 5% above the national average. But in real terms, this only means about 75 new positions in these two sectors combined. The job outlook for dancers in the Dallas area is projected to maintain current levels through to 2012. Although there are very few openings predicted to become available, the market could be right for enterprising performing artists to create jobs for themselves.
