Several schools support quality engineering programs in or near Dallas. The Southern Methodist University School of Engineering fosters strong relationships with leading technology businesses in the area as well as with high school students across the nation through its innovative Institute for Engineering Education. The school’s five academic departments offer 20 undergraduate and 29 graduate programs. In contrast, Texas Christian University in Fort Worth focuses its bachelor’s degree engineering program on mechanical and electrical engineering fields. The University of Texas branches at both Dallas and Arlington offer undergraduate and graduate programs. Students needing flexibility in scheduling classes might consider the Dallas campus of the DeVry Institute which offers bachelor’s degrees in biomedical and electronic engineering.
Job growth in engineering fields in the Dallas area will be strong through 2012, according to projections from the Texas Workforce Commission. A report showed that the region will employ 34,429 engineers and engineering technicians by 2012, up 6.2 percent from 32,392 in 2002. Growth is expected to be highest in the fields of aerospace, civil engineering and electrical engineering.
